I used to love popping down to Bent Spoon - it's less than a half block from our office building - to get an americano or latte, sometimes a sandwich. But, sometime after Christmas, they just disappeared. Now the space is filled with discount sale items from retail stores in the Hougen's Centre.
Bent Spoon, where art thou?
The KEBABery - Hooray! The KEBABery now takes cards
Written by Geof Harries on February 12, 2011
As mentioned in a previous review, I love The KEBABery's delicious food, but the cash-only payment is a pain. Well, no longer, as The KEBABery now takes debit and credit cards. Hooray!
Great food, nice atmosphere and close to downtown, The KEBABery is an awesome place for lunch and supper. I particularly like the chicken shawarma pita with tzatziki. Soooo good.
Antoinette's - Best fine(r) dining in Whitehorse
Written by Geof Harries on January 25, 2011
We came here with a group of seven people and had a terrific experience. The food was incredibly delicious and we were even served by Antoinette herself, who is quite charming and funny. All in all, one of the best places to eat in Whitehorse.

I really dig The KEBABery's delicious food, but their current "cash only" single payment option is a pain and keeps me from frequenting the establishment. Rarely do I carry cash, so if unprepared, I can't just stop into the restaurant on a whim.
Let's hope this is a short-term hassle as they transition into their new location, because I'm sure there's many others who also don't carry cash and are forced to end up buying a meal elsewhere.

We recently moved offices, so I called Northwestel three weeks prior to book an appointment to switch our telephone and cable Internet services. On our first day in the new location, the telephone technician showed up right on time, was courteous and got everything working, which was great. Unfortunately, the cable technician never showed up.
I phoned Northwestel to ask if the technician was on his way. The CSR, Danielle, informed me there wasn't an appointment made and apologized for the mistake. Problem was, the next earliest date she could set up was more than a week away. For a business that lives and dies on the Internet, this was not acceptable and very frustrating. Even a little scary.
I was about ready to go buy a Navigo modem from the Northwestel store when my business partner called to say he'd been in contact with Danielle. She'd pulled some strings: a cable technician was on his way. Less than 10 minutes later, he arrived. We had access later that afternoon.
Although I was pretty upset that our initial appointment never got added to their books, a great CSR saved the day and turned things right around. Thanks Danielle.

Metro is well worth the extra money you may spend on maintenance and repairs. We could go to other shops for our truck, but here the service and parts department are very courteous and friendly. I also find that they only sell us what we need, not what they want to sell...bonus!

We recently needed repair services on our truck and Irving was suggested by the insurance agent. From the moment I stepped in their door to all of my phone conversations afterward, Irving has been friendly, helpful and patient. I had lots of questions about what needed to be done and all of the costs involved, and each step of the way, I felt taken care of and respected.

That's not to say people who live here don't go to other cafes, but Java Connection is one of the best places to get yourself a great sandwich (big thumbs up on their turkey and cranberry sauce combo).

It's terrifying to think of how much money we've spent over the years at Bigway, purely for the convenience of not having to drive back downtown to get something. Oh well.
The store is nicely managed, staff are friendly and I can ride my bike or we can walk as a family to pick up stuff; all good points.

Yukon Brewing Company has got it all: fantastic product (their beer is excellent and it wins national awards), helpful store staff and they're strong supporters of community events. Nothing beats a post-bike ride, ice cold Arctic Red on a hot summer day.

As others have said, the decor and atmosphere is quite nice. Plus hey, TVs in the restrooms! We ordered wings and ribs, and both were delicious. It's cool to have a local pub that keeps it classy; let's hope that doesn't change with time.

Hard to find, but worth the effort, P&M makes it very easy to deal with recycling. Compared to Raven Recycling, here you can just drop off heaps of unsorted stuff and they organize everything for you, at no charge. If you have refundables, just wait in the (sometimes lengthy) line-up and the staff will shuffle through it for you.

We've been enrolling our kids in Leaping Feats' programs since they were very young. Their dance instructors are typically quite well skilled, patient and polite. Leaping Feats' dance studio is also nice; pretty cool for such a small city like Whitehorse to have such an impressive facility.

McCrae Chinese Restaurant is a little out of the way for those of us who live close to downtown Whitehorse, but it's definitely worth the drive. The food is consistently good and the portions are huge, so if you do take-out, there's a few days of leftovers ready to go. The atmosphere and decor within McCrae are, um, interesting; styled in that "real" Yukon kind of way. Great for families and groups of people too.
Board Stiff - A real snowboard shop
Written by Geof Harries on February 21, 2010
Over the past few years, Board Stiff has really turned itself around. I've always liked the shop (especially their central location in downtown Whitehorse) but it was a little too full of fashion attitude and flair for my tastes. I want my local snowboard shop to be an actual snowboard shop with knowledgeable staff and a wide selection of gear. This is what Board Stiff has become, plus hey, they have the fashion thing under control!

Whenever I wander down Main Street, Mac's is a magnet that I just cannot resist. Even if it's for a quick walk-around of their extensive magazine selection or a way to kill 30 minutes with your bored kids, this store is fantastic. There's other options in Whitehorse for new books - namely Coles - but the variety of publications, friendly service and good vibes at Mac's are really hard to beat.
Yukon Energy - Progressive and transparent
Written by Geof Harries on February 11, 2010
You have to give Yukon Energy credit: they've got a big service area to cover and only a small amount of staff to manage it. They're taking steps in the right direction to improve stability, which is good news. Plus, I admire how progressive and transparent they are, using blogs and social media to talk and listen to their customers.
Icycle Sport - Big selection and friendly, knowledgeable staff
Written by Geof Harries on February 9, 2010
Yes, they're the only real bike shop in Whitehorse, but Icycle Sport doesn't rest on their laurels. Fantastic selection of bikes, skis, gear and more. The staff are also very knowledgeable and friendly.

I love being able to walk into Midnight Sun and tour around the bike shop - or hang out at the back and chat with the mechanics - while I wait for my latte. A killer combo.
Northwestel - Good customer service
Written by Geof Harries on February 9, 2010
I've always had good experiences with Northwestel customer service; the people who help me are polite, efficient and knowledgeable. For such a small company (considering the area they serve) they do a bang-up job supporting their products and services.

Plus they have Guinness on tap!

I agree: good products and great service. It's very convenient to be able to walk into a local Apple dealer and get what you need, rather than wait weeks for something to arrive from the Apple online store.
Fountain Tire - Fair, honest and trustworthy
Written by Geof Harries on February 2, 2010
We've been taking our vehicles to Fountain Tire for nearly a decade. Their prices are fair and opinions honest, which is appreciated. Fountain Tire also doesn't try to up-sell you on parts and services that aren't really necessary; another bonus.

There is rarely a time when Baked is not packed and the line-up is 5-10 people deep. This is likely because the coffee and food is that good!
