Mac's Fireweed Books - easy shop

Written by madtapper on May 28, 2010

Great selection, including yukon based writers and whatnot. Great stop for the tourist and almost a sure fire spot to find that book you really want. Great location as well.

Board Stiff - good stuff

Written by madtapper on May 28, 2010

Great gear, if not a little childish. I do enjoy having a board shop that supplies replacement parts when i need them, and the owner is pretty easy to deal with when it comes to ordering stuff in. If you dig around, you can find great T's and pants, but most of the stuff is better left to the high school kids.

The KEBABery - love the service

Written by madtapper on May 28, 2010

I for one love a place where you serve yourself. After hearing many complaints about poor service, i was told to try it for myself, and i have gone back many times since. The food is great, it;s a clean, open shop, and the owner seems like a decent guy who doesn't mind shooting the breeze with his customers. Simple, healthy, no bells and whistle dinning at a good price.

The Capital Hotel - cha-ching

Written by madtapper on May 28, 2010

Over priced for starters. 14 bucks for an ounce of gin that costs 30 bucks a bottle at the booze store? Please Mr owner, don't insult me like that. That said, I've never had the food but i do love the recycled tables. The down side with the tables is that they clash with the ultra sleek look of the bar and draft tower. Sort of a monster mash up of new and old, but this bar is still young, so i am open to good things to come.

Gold Rush Inn - turn on a light

Written by madtapper on May 28, 2010

I enjoy this bar, and most of the staff the wings are great, the decor is very sporty, and at time's I've seen Jim Robb enjoying company and conversation. The Live music has it;s days as well.

The only downside is a few servers with major death ray eyes and the fact that this bar is way to dark. If you go, enjoy the Alexanders on tap and get yourself some cheap wings, but sit near a window or bring a flashlight to find your seat.

Riverside Grocery - Karen makes me laugh

Written by madtapper on May 28, 2010

I love this store, it has darn near everything from cleaning to cooking to reading to fixing, and the counter staff are a good laugh. Say hi to karen when your in, as she is a total doll, and try the frosty like greatness they keep behind the counter. It might not be Dairy Queen, but it's a close second place

Boiler Room Lounge - sing it out

Written by madtapper on May 28, 2010

decent bar, very low key, and without a doubt the safest bar in the city. I counted at least 20 cams in there one night, where other bars have 2 or less keeping an eye on things. The bouncers can be a bit over the top, but i don;t blame them considering some of the folks in there. Love the singing on stage and it seems like a lot of good groups of friends frequent the place.

Yukon Brewing - golden growlers

Written by madtapper on May 28, 2010

I love the growler idea, and was so glad to see the YB had these available. Darcy is always a laugh at the counter, and there is almost always someone around to yack with while you get a refill. The product is fantastic, the mindset is local, and the outcome is almost perfection. Award winning beers also feature along side some very creative brews, like the pumpkin spice ale, the birch ale, and the spiced brew they produce for the December holidays.

Baked Cafe & Bakery - hairy but alright

Written by madtapper on May 28, 2010

a fine spot for grabbing a quick bite from a decent kitchen crew, but the atmosphere is just a little to prissy to keep me around. I like the service, hairy armpits in a tank top aside, and the selection of cold bevys is healthy and decent. My only issue is that i find more in common with the 5 dogs tied up outside than the 30 government workers and 10 students inside.

Deck @ High Country Inn - cut work early on a friday

Written by madtapper on May 28, 2010

atmosphere: Very relaxed, more like being on your own deck at home than a bar. the dinky stuff hanging from the roof is fine enough, if not a little tacky. Fridays are nuts tho, avoid them if your not into bombast political talk and B.O.

service: realistic and down to earth. If you want to be waited on hand and foot, go somewhere where the steak costs 35 bucks. I enjoy the banter with the staff, my only issue is the turnover with a new face almost every week.

Grub and whatnot: The beer is fantastic and almost all local, and the food is great. Ask about the bbq menu.

Downsides: almost always to warm in the summer, but that's what the beer is for, and occasionally the service falls short when the bar is packed, but that will happen anywhere.
